About us

Who we are

Home of Hope Orphanage is Incorporated under the Trustees incorporation Act and is authorized by the Malawi Government to provide residential care to vulnerable children.

Home of Hope is a member of CONGOMA, the council for Non-Governmental Organization of Malawi and of NOVOC, the Network of Organizations for Vulnerable and Orphaned Children.

Home of Hope was founded by Rev Thomson Chipeta, a retired church minister who began taking vulnerable children into his home. As numbers grew the local CCAP church donated land to build a permanent home for these children. Many children come to the orphanage as motherless and fatherless one-day-old babies. They are usually brought by aging grandparents who can not afford to buy baby milk, and who will have to return to working in the fields to provide for the rest of the children in the family. Some of these children are fostered back into the community with the orphanage providing formula milk and clothing.

The rest of the children live at the Home, placed in family-style groups with foster mothers who have dedicated themselves to raising the children in an atmosphere where they will come to know that God loves and cares for them. Each day begins and ends with prayers. Food is cooked over wood fires. The children attend school and help grow staple foods such as maize and beans. The home also keeps chickens, bees and has several fish ponds.

Many of these babies would have died without the faith and dedication of the staff at Home of Hope, but despite all their efforts, the Home still has to find money to buy food and medicines and to pay school expenses. Many donors have contributed to the work since it began in 1998, but there is no secure, long term funding. The staff continue in faith, in Rev Chipeta’s own words, relying on a “fax line” to heaven when urgent needs arise – J333 – the Bible verse where God says: “Call to me and i will answer you….” (Jeremiah 33:3).
